As residents of Ladera Ranch, we’re fortunate to have incredible natural scenery right in our backyard. Beyond the trails winding throughout our community, the surrounding areas offer endless routes for experiencing breathtaking coastal and inland views. 

We highlight some of the top hiking spots nearby, perfect for every skill level. From casual strolls to multi-mile adventures, lacing up your boots promises a mindful escape amidst scenic trails. Read on for inspiration close to home!

Terry Lake Loop Trail – Laguna Niguel Regional Park
A gentle 1.1-mile loop circling Terry Lake offers a gentle introduction to the magical grasslands and coastal panoramas of this park. Spot songbirds and waterside wildlife on wooden boardwalks traversing the wetlands. Moderate terrain means it’s suitable for all ages. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Aliso Creek Trail – Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park
Stretching 5 miles one way along Aliso Creek, this moderate route rewards hikers with lush riparian habitats and native plant diversity. Keep your eyes peeled for foxes, deer, and egrets. Consider parking at La Paz Rd and covering just a few miles out and back amidst the forest tranquility.

Peak Trail – Caspers Wilderness Park
Climbing 1.5 miles one way up to the scenic ridgetop, cooler temps and panoramic ocean views make this Wood Canyon ascent worthwhile. Moderate miles on unpaved switchbacks are shaded by oaks, attracting migratory birds in spring. Respect seasonal closures to protect sensitive chaparral habitats.

Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park
Over 23 miles of interconnecting trails weave through coast live oaks, sycamores, and open meadows within this sprawling oasis. Beginner trails like Inner Sycamore and Live Oak run just over a mile. For adventure, hike the 5-mile loop combining Outer Sycamore, Willow, and Ridge trails for varied landscapes.

San Onofre Beach Trail
Stretching 3.5 moderate coastal miles one-way, this blufftop route along San Onofre State Beach rewards ocean vistas and beach access. Scan the surf for migrating gray whales from November through March. Consider parking at the trailhead off Cristianitos Rd for fantastic ocean views.

Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve
Well-marked boardwalks and trails encircle the largest remaining saltwater marsh in Southern California. Spot nesting birds along the Bridge to Beeks Bight Trail’s 1-mile loop. For variety, choose longer connectors like the 1.5-mile Forest Trail through coastal sage habitats.
