Bringing together pristine hills and canyons, the community of Ladera Ranch is outdoors active by its very nature. With over 30 miles of interweaving trails, residents find themselves exploring nature in their own backyard. This walking tour details some of the more scenic routes ideal for viewing stunning coastal vistas or simply clearing your head.
Start at the Peter’s Canyon Trail, which follows a gentle creek beneath California sycamores and oaks. Look for great blue herons fishing in the shallow waters as you walk 1.3 mostly flat miles each way. Access the trailhead from Brownsworth Ranch Road.
For serious hikers, take the unpaved trails that wind for 5 miles round trip up to higher ridges of Peters Canyon Regional Park. Look out for deer, coyotes, and even the occasional bobcat rustling in thick chaparral. Bring lots of water for this moderate hike, gaining 600 feet of elevation.
Just north, the Butterfield Stage Road Trail treats walkers to acres of rolling grasslands and native plants. Originally an ox-cart path, its crushed granite surface makes for easy 3-mile out-and-backs in either direction. Picnic areas and scenic overlooks dot the route perfect for taking a break.
History buffs like following alongside pioneer ranchers on the Ortega Highway Trail within Ladera Ranch. Relive 2.5 paved miles from the trailhead on Starhawke to learn about forging the Wild West. Interpretive signs enlighten you along the fairly flat course.
And for variety, stitch together several routes on the loop trail network snaking past equestrian fields and open spaces. Choose your starting point along Starhawke, Golden Lantern, or San Miguel Drive, then enjoy a soothing 4-6 mile adventure. Benches provide convenient resting spots.
Take the Miramar Trailhead Park for postcard views of the sparkling Pacific as you wrap up your tour. Hike 600 feet on moderate terrain over a 1.5-mile push up to the summit with panoramas stretching from Laguna Beach to Newport Coast. Refresh at water fountains and restrooms here, then safely descend.
Ladera Ranch is a park with peaceful trails to wander through and leave no trace behind. Practice respect for nature and other residents. Good walking shoes, water, and sun protection are highly recommended. Hike alone, hike with loved ones, but the paths offer a peaceful respite from busy surroundings and country charm. Happy trails!
