We’ve rounded up some exciting ways to take full advantage, whether hiking through lush forests, braving bigger surf, or cozying up to a warm fire. Keep reading for seasonal inspiration guaranteed to get you exploring!

Springtime Hikes

As rain showers end and vibrant wildflowers emerge, hit the trails in April and May for an ecological feast for the senses. Visit Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park to see brilliant carpets of orange poppies and purple lupine spread across the hills. Keep an eye out for newborn animals and returning birds arriving after winter migrations.

Moderate trails like Ecology and Nature Loop offer beautiful panoramas without too much exertion as you become reacquainted with nature.

Summer Beaches and Surf

June through September deliver balmy ocean temperatures perfect for beach bumming and catching waves. Beginner surfers can take lessons at Trestles Beach now blessed with gentler waves after El Niño storms. More experienced riders might tackle high-performance tours like Church or Poche. San Onofre and Capo Beach offer miles of soft sand for Frisbee, volleyball or just soaking up the sun and scenic vistas. Don’t forget a wetsuit for evening dips!

Autumn Adventures

As heat waves fade and colorful foliage emerges in fall, explore new parts of our region. Cruise scenic Ortega Highway through the Santa Ana Mountains spotting golden eagles. Hike the expansive running/cycling trails around Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve searching for migrating monarch butterflies.

For adrenaline-pumping fun, zip lining soars over treetops at Caspers Wilderness Park. Warmer days also mean harvest festivals and apple and pumpkin picking further afield.

Winter Escapes

When seasonal rain arrives, head indoors or seek cozy outdoor activities. Check local community centers for family-friendly events like ice skating shows. Pitch a tent at one of our nearby inland campgrounds like Chino Hills State Park for toasting s’mores by a roaring fire under the stars.

Feeling a bit more adventurous? Try snowboarding or cross-country skiing only 1.5 hours away atop Mt. Baldy. Coastal getaways provide ocean vistas and whale watching from comfortable seaside lodgings with crackling fireplaces.

Whatever the season may bring, taking advantage of our exceptional climate and bounty of nearby natural escapes gives us endless ways to refresh our spirit. From leisurely nature observation to adrenaline-pumping thrills, there’s an outdoor adventure tailored to every interest, ability, and weather wherever your exploration may lead around Ladera Ranch.

Wishing you many memorable journeys discovering this beautiful corner of the coast throughout 2024!
